About Dr. Scripsema

Nicole Scripsema, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist with the team at Wagner Macula and Retina Center in Virginia, Beach, Virginia, and specializes in vitreoretinal surgery and uveitis. 

Dr. Scripsema received her undergraduate degrees in neuroscience, biochemistry, and Italian from the University of Michigan and completed medical school at New York Medical College. She then completed her residency in ophthalmology at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Scripsema furthered her training internationally at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in London, specializing in pediatric and adult uveitis, retinal diseases, and other medical retinal conditions. Once she returned to the United States, Dr. Scripsema completed an additional fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Dr. Scripsema is actively involved in retinal imaging and clinical research, having presented her work at national and international meetings, and has been published in over 10 scientific journals. She is also very passionate about education and serves as an Assistant Professor of ophthalmology at Eastern Virginia Medical School training ophthalmology residents. Additionally, she volunteers her time at Lions Eye Clinic, offering free care to reduce the risk of blindness in the community. 

Outside of work, Dr. Scripsema is very active and enjoys cycling, swimming, and exploring Hampton Roads.
